Alastair McEwen
Director
After running his own practice for over 8 years, Alastair joined HJ Accounting & Advisory in 2019 as co-director with his wife, Helen.
He believes in building stable, long-lasting relationships with clients to enable better decision making. Helping clients solve both the little and earth-shattering issues keeps him coming to work. He has been happily married to Helen for over 25 years and is quite willing to spend time with his two sons.
Helen McEwen
Director
Helen joined HJ Accounting & Advisory in 2006. In 2019, she joined her husband, Alastair, as a director when Leigh stood down.
She enjoys working with clients to achieve their goals and the wide variety of businesses she works with, keeps Helen on her toes. She thrives on providing an individual service for each one and is a self-confessed problem solver who loves finding the perfect solution!
Tania Cribb
Client Manager
Tania is a long standing member of the HJ Accounting & Advisory team and credits the diverse nature of her role to be the reason she looks forward to coming to work each day.
She has built strong relationships with her clients and enjoys providing a great service that keeps them happy year after year. In her free time she loves to relax with her family.
Leigh Johnston
Consultant
Leigh has relinquished the helm of HJ Accounting & Advisory he had since its formation. He now works with specific clients on specialised matters.
Since the beginning, Leigh has enjoyed the close interaction with his clients, including getting out of the office and meeting them on-site. In his free time he loves to be out in the water, be it swimming, fishing or kayaking, and believe it or not, if Leigh wasn’t an accountant he’d probably be a builder!
Patricia De Mooy
Office Manager
Patricia is the newest member of our team, joining us in April 2023 after running her own business in the commercial building industry. As our office manager, she also provides bookkeeping services for several of our clients.
Patricia coordinates all our Administration, events and seminars, ensuring everything runs smoothly and on schedule. She has a passion for helping others and takes pride in keeping things organised and efficient.
In her spare time, Patricia is studying towards a New Zealand Certificate in Business (Accounting) to deepen her understanding of the accounting process. Outside of work, she enjoys spending quality time with her family.

HJ Accounting & Advisory has been serving the Hutt region since 1989. We employ qualified accountants to provide you with the services we offer. Our staff have a combined 40 years plus experience serving business just like yours. Helen and Alastair McEwen (the directors) are pleased to be members of the New Zealand Institute of Charted Accountants and call themselves Chartered Accountants (CA).
Clear Communication
You deserve to understand what you’re being told. We talk to our clients in plain English not in Accountanese. You will also receive an annual 1-hour meeting with your client manager to discuss any issues you are having in your business. This allows us to work together to make it even better. You will have us available to answer quick 10-minute queries by phone or email at no extra cost on our fixed fee plans.
Transparent Fees
On joining us at HJ Accounting & Advisory you will receive a written proposal for the work you request. This will outline the work that will be done and the estimated costs for that work. You will have a variety of payment options including a fixed fee or time and cost billing. Should any request fall outside this proposal, we will let you know and present a separate proposal for the requested service.
